Students Volunteers Job Shadowing

Screening for Aggressive Clients

Description:

Every student, employee, volunteer and physician has a duty to ensure a safe workplace. The literature suggests that past behaviour is a predictor of future behaviour. To help ensure a safe workplace, screening tools have been developed to assess a client's potential for aggressive, assertive or violent behaviour. The SCHC in collaboration with the University of Windsor is currently validating a tool used locally to predict a client's tendency to exhibit aggressive, assertive or violent behaviour.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Review the daily client list; ask if the staff is familiar with the client's behaviour and past history.
  • Review the charts of clients seeking medical attention in the clinic that the staff identify as having a potential for aggressive, assertive or violent tendencies.
  • Meet with, interview or assess clients.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Familiarize yourself with medical diagnoses that have the potential to exhibit aggressive, assertive or violent behaviour.
  • Familiarize yourself with medications used to treat clients with diagnoses with a potential to exhibit aggressive, assertive or violent behaviour.
  • Hone your interview skills.
  • Learn de-escalation techniques and effective communication strategies.
  • Participate in and learn about validating research tools.
