SPITS don't do SPIT
SPITS don't do "SPIT" will be offered in the fall of 2009. The need for this program became apparent through observations made while providing current programming at local high schools. It was discovered that youth are now engaging in the use of smokeless tobacco/chewing tobacco at increased rates. The goal of this program is to educate youth about the dangers of using chewing tobacco. The pilot program will consist of health fairs, speaking engagements and recruitment sessions. It will feature Windsor SPITFIRE hockey players who will champion the message to youth from grades five to twelve, ages fourteen to twenty years. After identifying students who use SPIT, a self-help/mutual aid group providing education and support will be developed to help them quit. The program will be offered once a week for six to eight weeks, for 60-75 minutes per class. The Windsor SPITFIRE hockey team (two players), the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) and the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) will collaborate with SCHC to provide this program.
